After a vacuum, Student Activity Unit (UKM) Uwika Choir began to entertain the audience again. The debut was on December 13, 2012 on the campus of the University of Widya Kartika (Uwika). In front of about 50 spectators, they presented an impressive harmonious collaboration through activities entitled “Sing Your Soul”.
Samantha Purwoko, the chief of the event, explained that the event was divided into two sessions which were workshop and concert. “So, in addition to enjoying performances of Uwika Choir, those who came will also gain benefit in the form of knowledge,” she said.
In the workshop, the organizers invited a choir trainer, Ike M. Sinandang. On that occasion, Ike shared ‘the recipes’ dealing with singing techniques. According to her, every human has been familiar with the habit of singing. In fact, since we were child, our ears had been familiar with song humming. Thus, everyone had the same vocal talent. The difference was, some could train well and others were only did it normally.
If seen from the number of singers, there were some terms used in the world of singing. There were solo, duet, trio, quartet, and even a choir. Well, solo and group, like choir, had fundamental differences.
“If you sing alone, we do not need to adapt to the other. But if in the choir, soprano singer must be able to adjust with other sopranos. Later, a small group of soprano has to be able to sing harmoniously with small group of alto or tenor voice in a choir. Thus, the song that brought will sound harmoniously,” she explained.
In the workshop, Ike also shared some tips for singers so they can have good voice such as avoid smoking, alcohol, and greasy food. In addition, singers are encouraged to drink plenty of water, keep silence, and keep the humidity at home or working place.
In the event, Uwika Choir sang three songs which were “That I See The Light”, “When You Believe”, and “Sik Sik Batumanikam”. During the last song, they added a variety of movements while singing. As a result, what had presented rouse appreciation from the audience.
Besides as a means of existence, the mini concert would also be a promotion. Samantha explained that the audience who came, were freshmen. Hopefully, after the performance of Uwika Choir, the freshmen will be interested in joining in UKM Choir. “So, in the future, Uwika Choir may exist more and gain achievement,” she concluded.
